FAQs - Young Drivers and Car Finance

In today’s car buying market, the majority of cars are bought on finance due to the fantastic deals and low monthly payments available to customers. Taking a car on finance allows you to budget more easily and still save. It can sometimes be very daunting saving thousands for a car and then seeing it all disappear.

The most popular financing plan is a PCP (Personal Contract Plan). This offer means you have lower monthly payments, with an option to either pay the balloon payment at the end, or hand the keys back. With PCP finance, you can make your monthly payments lower by increasing the deposit amount you put down when signing.

The benefit of PCP is that you have two options; you can either keep the car and pay the small balloon at the end, or hand the car back and start again with another new car of your choice.

Currently, White Dove SEAT have 4-Years 0% Finance when buying a brand new SEAT. This means, you take finance against the cost of the car and pay no interest on top! The quotes for the Leon, Ibiza, and Mii all include the 0% offer.

I'm unsure about getting finance - I'm only young
Don’t be nervous, it’s a very popular purchase method! You do have to be over 18-Years-Old but as long as you can afford the monthly payments, there is no issue with having finance at a young age. On occasion, evidence is to be provided to the finance company to show you have a steady income, and can afford the re-payments. But don’t be put off by having car finance when you’re young, it’s a very common process now.

One of the biggest issues for young drivers today is that they have little to not credit history, and this makes it difficult to obtain finance. This is because companies like to see a history of someone who is borrowing money, to assess whether they can pay the monthly payments on time, and can afford them.

Note: no lender only uses your credit rating to approve your finance. They also take into consideration;
  • If you make regular payments on time (e.g. Phone Bill).
If you are borrowing money for the first time there are a few things you can do;
  1. Manage your bank account – set up and regularly use a UK current bank account. This can help improve your chances of getting finance if you can show that you can run it responsibly.
  2. Set up direct debits – using regular Direct Debit payments will demonstrate your ability to make payments on time.
  3. Register on the electoral roll – it is important that credit agencies have a record of previous addresses you have lived it; this helps provide a profile of you and your financial footprint.

What are the requirements of applying for Car Finance?
  • Personal details
  • Address details for the past five years
  • Employment details for the last three years
  • Your bank details
  • Your monthly income and expenditure
Will I need a guarantor for car finance?
Some lenders will require a guarantor e.g. parent on rare occasions, but this is dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

Can my parents take car finance out for me in their name?
It is not advised for someone to take out a finance agreement on behalf of someone else. This causes risk to the finance company who may not be able to get the car or money back in an event of a contract breach.

On PCP deals, you can simply hand the car back after 4-years, providing it is in good condition and kept within the mileage requirements.

Can I have a black box fitted if my car is on Finance?
You can, this is to be arranged with your insurance company, and removed if and when you give the vehicle back.

You can have a private plate on your car if it is on finance providing it has been changed with the DVLA and you have let the finance company know that the car is no longer registered under its original plate.
